86 year old Ukrainian Holocaust survivor, Auschwitz, Poland 2009

I met this man in the bitter cold winter morning of 2009 for the Holocaust Memorial Day and it was -5 degrees, He had come all the way by train from Ukraine to commemorate the libration of Auschwitz-Birkenau on the 27 January at the 64th anniversary of the Nazi German death camp. He was walking slowly under The sign "Arbeit macht frei" (Work sets you free) gate. For me here I wanted to capture history as their were not many left and 14 years on I wonder how many are left in 2023.
It was estimate that around 1,1 million people perished in Auschwitz during the less than 5 years of its existence. The majority, around 1 million people, were Jews. The second most numerous group, from 70 to 75 thousand, was the Poles, and the third most numerous, about 20 thousand, the Gypsies.
Auschwitz concentration camp was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust.
