The Smiling Monk, Tibet 2004 - The Story behind the Photograph
The Smiling Monk, Tibet 2004

Tibet is a fascinating place to photograph portraits. This image of the Buddhist monk was taken at the Shekar Gyantse Monastery. People often ask me: what is your favourite Country?. That is a very hard question to answer. But I can tell you one of the saddest countries that I ever been to is Tibet. The Chinese occupation has resulted in so much oppression of the Tibetan people. I have found Tibetans to be some of the most humble, beautiful people that I ever met and photographed. Look at the hands of the Smiling Monk. Look at the rag on his head. Where would you find in our society someone in a religious order who is so humble ?
