At the Puskhar camel fair I came across this man and he was drinking water and they only use one jug or cup and the water never touches the lips as they share the cup with fellow herdsmen, It a great art in the way they drink the water. The evening before I was in Hotel Tibet singing Irish songs and many the Tibetan Government in exile were there listening and enjoying the likes of Molly Malone, Dublin's fair City ..........and under the influence was getting them to join me in .... Alive, alive, oh Alive, alive, oh Crying "cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh" They loved it and we were there till 4am. With my sore head the next day I joined the celebration and it was held in the Tcv School Ground, Mcleodganj, Dharamshala; Not like nowadays with all the security and pomp it was a joyous time and very relaxed and even was introduced to his sister who was master of ceremonies. He arrived and was watching the ceremony from his elevated seat and from the side I got in close and shouted in Hindi to smile and he turned and here is the result, never published to this day and first time I show it on social media. I found out later they only leave there home around 4/5 pm and walk down the street and into a taxi and gone, so not an easy task but wanted for my collection as I found them very interesting. On my last day I arrived there was a commotion of about 30 photographers and with my body and sign language someone explained that one was coming out of a house and was going from a Maiko to Geisha, (Geiko). As she appeared I thought this will not be easy with the 30 photographers but could not believe my fortune, she looked straight at me and smiled. Maiko’s outfits are more eye-catching to divert attention from the lack of knowledge and experience. Geisha’s fashion is usually more mature and subtle. Maiko must live in the “mother”s house and depend on the little stipend she receives from the geisha house. Geisha, on the other hand, are more independent and live in a separate house of their own in the geisha neighbourhoods. Geisha (Geiko)? Geisha are professional artists who are registered in official geisha associations and excel in traditional Japanese arts and crafts such as shamisen playing, dancing, and tea ceremony. Geiko is the word that refers to geisha in the Kyoto dialect. The day after a 40-hours flight via via to the world’s highest-altitude airports La Paz in Bolivia, I went to a local market and there I saw a mother with her child wrapped in a blue blanket and when I see that special moment like in this case my adrenaline goes up a level or 2 as you don't know how much time you have with the moment or how you will capture the FRAME. Using basic body language, I asked to photograph her child. She readily replied, “Si”. I was delighted and my fears lifted. However, two days later and for the next eight weeks, I experienced the local weather phenomenon, ironically called EL NINO, (which also means ‘the little boy’). The sky had turned white and I could not photograph any landscapes of Machu Picchu or the region’s mountains or lakes. A week later, on a Sunday, I went to visit their colony, but it looked deserted. Eventually I saw a young child and he pointed me to the church. From the pulpit, the preacher instructed me to sit on the men’s side of the church. After the service, I inquired about my new friends from the Stampede, but no one knew them. Apparently, it was frowned upon to attend such unChrist like event, and therefore, to keep their secret the Hutterites I met from the Stampede had directed me to a different colony. Some of the places I went to: New York, Chicago, New Orleans and San Francisco. While traveling from Colorado to the Grand Canyon, I met a lady in her seventies and we got chatting. She advised to wait going to Las Vegas and go to the Native American POW-WOW in Shiprock, New Mexico near the four corners (the junction of the states Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico). I asked her what a POW-WOW was and she told me it was a gathering of native American Indians. It sounded fascinating and there was something about the way she spoke. My instinct said: ‘go for it. I changed my plans on the spot and went to the POW-WOW. One thing I have found, as a portrait-photographer, you need to be a good communicator. When I met this Navajo Indian (native American) at the POW-WOW sitting in the back of his open pick up truck I noticed he was blowing pink bubblegum. I approached him and asked whether I could take a picture of him. The second frame I asked, would you please blow the bubblegum? As in my mind, while taking it, you had two great American icons. One being the native American and the other being bubblegum. He was a little shy at first, but after a little persuasion he agreed. He was walking slowly under The sign "Arbeit macht frei" (Work sets you free) gate. For me here I wanted to capture history as their were not many left and 14 years on I wonder how many are left in 2023. It was estimate that around 1,1 million people perished in Auschwitz during the less than 5 years of its existence. The majority, around 1 million people, were Jews. The second most numerous group, from 70 to 75 thousand, was the Poles, and the third most numerous, about 20 thousand, the Gypsies. Auschwitz concentration camp was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust. Because it was the most formal and regulated place I have ever been to. Nobody really talks to you and even I found it hard-going to make contact as I knew no one there. “This is going to be a hard place to photograph, ” I thought. I headed for the Imperial Palace Gardens in Tokyo and to my pleasant surprise there was the old traditional wedding ceremony in progress. This lady I had spotted, was at first was very shy to be photographed. But I liked the face so much that I waited until she came out of the wedding hall. Then I asked her again: “Could I make a picture of you please?” And she agreed. Because of the caste system, if you are born disabled in India, you did something in your previous life. It has to do with your karma. Why I titled this image NO CHOICE as you can imagine, if you are born with a disability you end up either begging or in his case as a HOLY MAN (SADHU) which properly takes you up the ladder of respect for himself at least .I imagined this man probably had to fend for himself from a very young age as society tends to discard disabled people. Ever curious I opened a door and saw this one girl sitting alone on the floor. I immediately got on my knees as I wanted to get the right angle for the framing of this picture and some boys were sitting off to her right. Exquisitely dressed, she might have been getting married off that day as it was and is in the Muslim culture amongst poor families to arrange marriages as young as 9 years old. When I used to tell this story in the early 2000’s people thought I as crazy. When I returned to Holland and had it framed, people remarked that this photograph resembled a Rembrandt painting. Coming from Ireland we were never educated in the arts and for sure hade no idea about the great Dutch artists. When I finally went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, I too could see the similarities and I was chuffed with myself. While in India in 1989, impressions were coming on my left, right and centre. In a small village in Gujarat, this old woman was coming out of a hut. I took a few pictures and didn’t think much about it until I got back to Amsterdam. Remember most of these images are from pre-digital time; all shot on slide-films and you had to wait anywhere up to four months to see the results when you got back home and it was interesting that some people think she looks like ET from the movie which was the biggest movie of its time. This image of the Buddhist monk was taken at the Shekar Gyantse Monastery. People often ask me: what is your favourite Country?. That is a very hard question to answer. But I can tell you one of the saddest countries that I ever been to is Tibet. The Chinese occupation has resulted in so much oppression of the Tibetan people. Seeing Hasidic Jews at the Wailing Wall with their long black coats and dangling curly locks of hair, I was fascinated to be able to witness something so ancient in the 20th century. In the 1980’s these men where very reluctant to have their pictures taken and sometimes could get quite aggressive with me telling me not to take photos and I was not a true Believer and deemed unholy to be at the Wailing Wall. I decided to revisit Jerusalem before I moved to Ireland after living in Holland for 30 years. When I went back to the Wailing Wall in 2008 I had bought a Canon G10 a point and shoot camera but good for quick shots, sharp and not intrusive. I really did not know what to expect especially from my previous encounter. Arriving at the Wall with my Canon G10 and after a few minutes, a Hasidic Jew called me over and said he had just received the same camera from some relatives in the United States of America and would I show him the basics and I said yes. Every day I arrived we spend time to help him to understand the camera and in turn unknown to myself it opened up the ease I could photograph there as the other Hasidic Jews thought we were related and with that I had no problems for the time. I was there and made some great images. It turned out He was also a Rabbi the guy I was helping with the camera. I found the Hasidic Jews to be more open, but they were still wary of photographers. I spent 10 days in Jerusalem and at least 6/7 hours every day at the Wailing Wall. This is one of my favourite pictures as this portrait looks like it could have been made over 2000 years ago. Time hasn’t moved on for these people and never will. I took it on the underground section to the left of the Wall. One other thing about this photo the first Photographic book I ever bought was a book about the Jews in the Warsaw Getto and photographed by Roman Vishniac's and the title was called ..... A Vanished World..... A celebrated collection of photographs taken between 1934 and 1939. Vishniac walked across Poland, the Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, and Lithuania with his camera, preserving for posterity images of a Jewish way of life fated soon to be destroyed, If you google the Title ......A Vanished World..... you will see a resemblance of the Cover and this photo. It was extremely poor but you always had plenty of food and very good to say, they really lived a very simple life as you can see here in the photo. I hear now that Dali is a top Tourist spot.
